Quilt Worx Studio is no stranger to the South African Quilting scene. In 2011, I opened the Bernina on Musgrave Dealership in the heart of Durban, in conjunction with a new Quilting Store, specializing in premium Quilting Fabrics, Notions and Haberdashery, The Quilt Worx.
Coming from an IT and corporate background, I was a novice to all things Sewing and Quilting. Moving over from Sydney, Durban became my new home. I quickly learnt that not only was Sewing and Quilting a niche craft, but that Durban itself was very much a distinct place, a city of cliques and tightly knit communities. Luckily, after much scrutiny by the local sewers, I passed my probation and was accepted.
Learning quickly, I hit the ground running, with lots of on-the job training. Embracing both businesses, I discovered two new passions, one being the Bernina brand and products, especially the high-end computerised sewing machines, accessories and embroidery software. The other was the love for quality quilting fabrics. Beautiful, exotic, premium cotton fabrics; Solids, Blenders, Florals, Metallics and PreCuts.
We started the business with a modest range of imported 100% cotton quilting fabrics, 7 shelves only. By 2021, 10 years later, we became a fully fledged Quilting Store, Retail and Online. Our Fabric lines filled 2 rooms, boasting exclusive high-end fabric ranges from some of the best Quilting Houses like Robert Kaufman and Timeless Treasures. Quilters around South Africans discovered us and loved our vast selections. More significantly, we built our own community through our sewing, and quilting classes. Beautiful friendships were formed by clients, whilst learning new techniques, skills and crafts, over lots of cups of coffee and of course, surrounded by beautiful fabrics.
After a 2 year break, and having sold the Bernina Dealership, we have made the exciting decision to restart the business, as an online Specialist Quilting Store. My fervour for luxurious, 100% cotton quilting fabrics and long-standing relationship with Robert Kaufman, has led to us to continuing where we left off. Providing South African Quilters and Sewists with the finest fabrics and notions to create with.
