What is the difference between Quilting Cotton and Ordinary Cotton?
Quality. Quilting cotton is a midweight, 100% cotton cloth, specifically manufactured and designed for use in the making of quilts. The main difference between regular cotton and quilting cotton is that quilting cotton has a tighter weave, higher quality and thread count, making it softer, stronger, more durable and less prone to fraying and distortion. Apparel cotton can be any made from any type of weave and weight and often includes blends with other fibres. Quilting cotton is usually crisper and has less drape than apparel cotton Fabrics.
Durability. Quilting cotton is made up of long staple cotton, that is, the length of the cotton fibre is 1.75″ (3.5cm) long and weighs around 140gsm / 4oz per yard. Normal Cotton weighs approx. 2oz – 3oz per yard. Quality Quilting Solids, like Kona® Cottons, weigh 4.3oz per yard, making it much sturdier to work with. Quilting Cotton is usually manufactured in a 44” (115cm) width. Some quilting fabric ranges come in a wider width of 108” (270cm), ideal for your Quilt Backings or wider projects, ensuring no joins or pattern matching and a classier finish.
