Quilting

Quilters aka Quilties

Today’s Quilters are Unique. We love all things textile, especially Fabric, loads of Fabric, to be specific. Nothing but pure 100% premium Cotton Fabric, the highest grades, nonetheless. The more Fabric we have, the more we stash, the more we stash, the happier we are. The cycle perpetuates, we buy and collect more fabric; we need to have more Fabrics just in case we don’t have the right amount, shade or texture for the next Quilt, Bag or Creation. It’s just the way it is!

Quilties, (the new global term for Quilters), are a fascinating breed, quite unique and easy to spot. Drawn to like-minded quilt-lovers and other crafters, they gather in guilds and flock to festivals. Quilties have their own language and mannerisms and are often called addicts. An addiction for the art of Quilting itself and owning only the best Quilting Supplies and Fabrics. It’s a passion! Forming and belonging to their own quilting communities, they have their own camaraderie. Since Covid, quilting communities are now globally connected, coming together in online forums, classes and easily accessible via social media.

Quilts tell stories. Traditionally made to depict the colourful diversity of different eras and places, and to capture segments of the lives of the people who created them. Today, Quilts are often made as gifts, to celebrate life occasions such a marriage, births, birthdays, or to capture a special event or time. Quilts have become art pieces, showcasing the maker’s artistic expression and creativity.

Due to the improved quality of pure cotton fabrics, precut fabrics, the use of technology, software programs and enhanced equipment and tools and new, sophisticated quilting and sewing machines, quilting has evolved into sophisticated pieces of fine art. Varying from Traditional Quilts to Modern Quilts, Patchwork Quilts, Whole Cloth Quilts and Arty Quilts, they range from baby quilts to king-sized bed quilts. Quilts are made using a variety of techniques from Patchwork Piecing to Applique, decorated and quilted with embroidery modules and ruler-precision lines, embellishments and mixed media.

With every quilt we make, a little bit of our souls, a great deal of our time, and sew much love is poured into laboriously creating a masterpiece. Each finished product is different. Often, they don’t look like anything we intended when we first started but when completed, they end up as amazing masterpieces, that can be displayed on walls, used to beautify beds and couches or given to our loved ones to snuggle up to. Sew completely gratifying!
